The name of the town is often incorrectly translated as “Native Duck,” but there is no known translation of the town name. The community is bordered by other rural areas, including Lawai, Omao, and Kalaheo. Ideally located in the prime beachfront regions in South Kauai, residences here are in high demand thanks to its convenience and numerous attractions. The area features well-developed subdivisions and remnants of ranches and homesteads.
Koloa and Koloa town is known for cattle ranches and a sugarcane plantation. Koloa has an elevation below Omoa and adjacent to Lawai while reaching Poipu below but not reaching the ocean. Koloa town is a popular visitor destination with a grocery store, a bank, a library, and various other retail stores restaurants and bars. Koloa is one of the main tourist towns in South Shore, featuring two notable beaches and a variety of well-known attractions that visitors frequent. These include the Allerton Garden, Poipu Beach, Shipwreck Beach, and many more. The area is also known for its many golf clubs with three Kukui’ula Golf Course, Kiahuna Golf Club, and Poipu Bay Golf Course.
